Huawei, the Chinese manufacturer presented its new smartphones at an international press conference in Paris. Huawei P20 Pro launch event this week was dedicated to the new device’s camera capabilities, reflecting the great deal of time and attention the company has dedicated to mobile photography.
Huawei has crafted a formidable contender for the crown of best smartphone camera. Not surprising, because there has been a lot of leakage over both the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro.
Just like Samsung, Huawei is high on the digital camera. The two companies, however, opt for a totally different approach. Samsung has equipped its flagship devices with a camera with a variable aperture, for better results in poor lighting conditions. The Galaxy S9 is equipped with a single camera, while the S9 Plus has a dual camera.
Huawei P20 camera
Huawei chooses again for a collaboration with the high-quality photography manufacturer Leica. To start with the Huawei P20, this smartphone is equipped with a dual camera. It is an improved variant compared to the P10.
It is a 12 megapixel camera with a 1 / 2.3-inch RGB sensor and an f / 1.8 lens. And a 20 megapixel camera with a 1 / 2.78 “monochrome sensor and a bright f / 1.6 lens. Both cameras have a focal length of 27 mm. The photos are edited in the camera by software, creating beautiful bokeh effects, less noise, more details and a higher dynamic range.
Huawei P20 Pro camera
The Huawei P20 Pro does not have a single or dual camera, it is the first smartphone in the world with a triple camera. For this a 40 megapixel, a 20 megapixel and an 8 megapixel camera is used. A 1 / 1.78 “sensor is used, which is almost twice as large as the sensor in the S9. This allows the camera to absorb much more light, with beautiful photos as the end result.
Just like the Galaxy S9, the Huawei P20 Pro is also capable of capturing super slow motion videos with 960fps in HD resolution. The Sony Xperia XZ2 is the only smartphone camera with a 960fps slow motion function that can record in Full HD. Videos capture the latest Huawei smartphones in 4K resolution.
The P20 Pro is full of innovative camera technologies. There is a 6-axis image stabilization system built in and there is a Leica lens available with 3x optical zoom and 5x hybrid zoom. The camera has an impressive ISO range of up to 102,400, which makes evening shooting no problem for this smartphone. At the front, both P20 models have a 24 megapixel selfie camera.
DxOMark Mobile tests new Huawei smartphones
Now, of course, specifications do not mean anything. That is why independent DxOMark Mobile has tested the new 2018 smartphones for image quality. Until the beginning of this year, the Google Pixel 2 and the Apple iPhone X were the No. 1 and 2 when it comes to ‘Best smartphone camera’. These aircraft received a DxO score of 98 and 97 points respectively.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus outperformed this score with a DxO score of 99. Today the new Huawei phones are even better at throwing their eyes. The Huawei P20 achieves a score of 102. His big brother, the Huawei P20 Pro even achieved a score of no less than 109 points. A crazy result!
Naturally, Huawei also has its 2018 models equipped with AI functionality (artificial intelligence). The Huawei Mate 10 Pro was the first smartphone from the Chinese manufacturer with a special AI chip. The new P20 series builds on this.
We can safely conclude that the Huawei P20 series knows how to beat the latest smartphone models from Samsung when it comes to camera functionality. But what about the price? Samsung opted for a suggested retail price of € 850 and € 950 respectively for the S9 and the S9 Plus.
Even when it comes to the sales price, the new Huawei smartphones know the Korean counterpart to sidelined. You can buy the Huawei P20 immediately for a suggested retail price of € 650.
The smartphone is equipped with 4GB of RAM memory and no less than 128GB of storage. This device has 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage space and has a price of € 900.
